Imperial sizes are the traditional measurements in inches or feet and inches.

Metric sizes have been used in new home construction for about 30 years and differ in height, width, and thickness from imperial sizes.

  • Imperial doors are typically 1 3/8 inches thick (35mm) for older doors, with the two larger sizes possibly being 40mm or 45mm thick.
  • Metric doors are generally 40mm thick (1 5/8 inches) for more modern doors.
  • FD30 fire doors (providing 1/2 hour fire resistance) are 1 3/4 inches thick (45mm).
  • FD60 fire doors (1-hour fire doors) are typically 2 1/8 inches – 54mm thick.

This increased thickness compared to FD30 doors provides additional fire resistance, allowing the door to withstand fire for up to 60 minutes.
